In the village of Maheriv in Lviv district, two 82 mm mortar shells from the Second World War were discovered in a dried-up lake. The munitions were lying at a distance of about 1.5 metres from the shore.
On 26 August, bomb disposal experts from the Lviv Mobile Rapid Response Rescue Centre of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine removed the shells and destroyed them in the prescribed manner.
The Main Department of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in Lviv region stresses that old munitions remain dangerous even after many decades. Damage, corrosion or prolonged exposure in the ground or water does not mean they have lost their ability to explode.
Rescuers urge the public, in the event of discovering suspicious objects, to follow these simple safety rules:
- do not touch the object you have found;
- do not attempt to move or dismantle it;
- move away to a safe distance and call 101 immediately.
The State Emergency Service emphasises that people's vigilance can prevent accidents and save lives.
