An attempt to smuggle ancient icons and knives in a bus at Rava-Ruska checkpoint

A 49-year-old woman was smuggling ancient icons and knives abroad

At the Rava-Ruska checkpoint, border guards prevented an attempt to smuggle antiquities and weapons abroad.

Yesterday, during the inspection of a bus en route to Poland, the border and customs inspection group found two icons that may be of cultural and historical value, as well as two knives. These items belonged to a bus passenger, a 49-year-old Ukrainian citizen.

The icons and knives were seized. Operational officers of the 7th Border Guard Detachment of the Carpathian border guard detachment sent a report to the relevant authorities on the detection of signs of a criminal offence under Article 201 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine “Smuggling of cultural property and weapons”. Further decisions will depend on the results of the examination of the seized items.

In addition, yesterday at the border with Poland, at the Smilnytsia checkpoint, border guards and customs officers prevented an attempt to smuggle 39 old books published in Germany during the Weimar Republic. According to the driver of the vehicle in which the publications from the 20s and 30s of the last century were found, the books were a parcel that he had picked up in Germany and was supposed to hand over in Kyiv.

Customs officers seized the books and drew up a report on violation of customs regulations.
