Ancient coins discovered at the Smilnytsia border crossing point

At the Smilnytsia border crossing point, officers of the 7th Carpathian Border Guard Detachment, together with customs officials, stopped an attempt to take out of Ukraine a number of old coins that may have historical or cultural value.

During an inspection of the personal belongings of a 49-year-old Ukrainian citizen, who was leaving the country by car in a Renault, law enforcement officers found nine coins of various origins. Among them were coins of Polish, Hungarian and British minting, as well as other specimens.

According to the available information, the oldest coin dates back to 1866, and the most recent to 1943. Customs officers drew up a report on the incident, and the seized coins will be sent for expert examination to determine their historical or cultural value.
