Following a public prosecution by the Lviv Regional Prosecutor’s Office, two Ukrainian citizens were found guilty. They were convicted of high treason, participation in a terrorist organisation and activities of armed groups not provided for by law (Article 111(1) and (2), Article 258-3(1), Article 260(2) of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
They were sentenced to 15 years in prison with confiscation of all property.
Prosecutors proved in court that in 2022, the residents of Donetsk region voluntarily sided with the enemy and joined an illegal armed formation of the “people’s police” of the DNR terrorist organisation.
The men received military uniforms, weapons and were enrolled in separate rifle battalions, where they performed the duties of a rifleman and a grenade launcher assistant. One of them was also involved in the separate Ilovaisk Guards Assault Battalion ‘Somalia’, which is subordinate to the terrorist organisation ‘Donetsk People’s Republic’.
During their military service, the defendants performed various tasks related to the conduct of hostilities against the Armed Forces of Ukraine. They also ensured the security of the Russian army’s locations, arranged trenches, dugouts and performed guard duty to protect the territory.
Their criminal activity was terminated due to their capture.
The pre-trial investigation in the criminal proceedings was conducted by the SBU Office in Lviv region.
