In Yavoriv District, Lviv region, a 27-year-old man has been sentenced to 13 years in prison for raping his niece. Lviv Regional Prosecutor’s Office proved the defendant’s guilt in court, based on part 4 of Article 152 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. During the public prosecution, supported by the head of the regional prosecutor’s office Mykola Meret, the decision to imprison was ordered.
The court also upheld a civil lawsuit from the victim’s side, amounting to 200,000 hryvnias. Additionally, information about the convicted person has been entered into the Unified Register of Persons who committed crimes against the sexual freedom and inviolability of minors.
The crime took place at the beginning of June last year, when the convict, while intoxicated, raped his 13-year-old niece in one of the local villages. The man stayed overnight at his sister’s house, where her family lives. Around 4 a.m., he entered the room where the child was sleeping and, taking advantage of her defencelessness, committed the crime.
The frightened teenager later fled to the street, trying to hide, but her abuser pursued her. Eventually, the girl locked herself in a summer kitchen. In the morning, the parents found the child in a state of shock and called the police and medics. Thanks to the swift actions of law enforcement, the attacker was apprehended.
He is currently in custody, awaiting the finalisation of the verdict according to the criminal procedure code of Ukraine. The court decision comes into effect after the expiration of the appeal period.
