Dangerously low water levels expected on rivers in the Dniester, San and Western Bug basins

Meteorologists are warning of a level-three hydrological hazard, linked to a further fall in water levels in a number of rivers in western regions of Ukraine.

From 15 to 25 August, due to predominantly dry weather, rivers in the Dniester basin within Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Ternopil and Khmelnytskyi regions, as well as in the San basin (Lviv region) and the Western Bug basin (Lviv and Volyn regions), are expected to experience a further drop in water levels down to, and in some places below, the lowest values recorded over many years of observation.

According to the forecast, river discharge will continue to decrease, reaching low-water thresholds. On some small watercourses, flow may cease completely, complicating the operation of the region’s water management system. A brown hazard level has been declared for this situation.

Residents and water users are urged to take this warning into account when planning water supply, irrigation and other activities involving the use of water resources.
