New traffic lights on Shevchenka Street in Riasne, Lviv, to come into full operation from 24 August

In the Riasne neighbourhood of Lviv, at 311-B Shevchenka Street, a new traffic light installation has been built. The traffic lights are currently operating in flashing amber mode, and from 24 August they will switch to full operational mode. Control will be in an adaptive format, taking into account the actual traffic situation at the junction. This was reported by LKP «Lvivavtodor».

The traffic light installation was built using off-budget funds. The contractor was RAUN LLC, and the works were financed by Bavaria Lviv LLC.

According to LKP «Lvivavtodor», a range of works has been carried out on this section: the carriageway of Shevchenka Street has been widened, with a separate lane created for left turns while maintaining two lanes for traffic leaving the city; a separate public transport lane has been created for traffic entering the city; traffic light equipment has been installed with cable laying, and new road markings have been applied.

“This will make the T-junction safer for everyone: both pedestrians and drivers making a left turn from Shevchenka Street or joining the main road,” said Mykola Vlasiuk, Director of LKP «Lvivavtodor».

How the traffic lights will work for drivers

For vehicles travelling along Shevchenka Street, the green signal will remain on continuously if:

  • there are no vehicles waiting to turn left from Shevchenka Street towards McDonald’s or exiting from the side road; and
  • pedestrians have not pressed the push button to request the pedestrian phase to cross the main road.

For the green signal of the additional traffic light section for a left turn or for exiting from the side street to come on, a vehicle must stop before the stop line. If vehicles do not pull up to the stop line, the green signal will not be activated.

The length of the virtual zone before the stop line is 2 m — it is within this zone that a vehicle must stop for the system to detect it and give a green signal.

How pedestrians should use the new traffic lights

To cross Shevchenka Street, pedestrians need to press the push button to request the pedestrian phase on the traffic light pole and wait for the green signal. The waiting time for a green signal for pedestrians will be approximately 8 to 50 seconds, depending on the current traffic intensity.

It is important to note that the green signal for pedestrians is activated only after the push button has been pressed.

LKP «Lvivavtodor» expressed its gratitude to the investor company for its contribution to improving road safety on this section. In total, the company currently maintains 177 traffic light installations in the city, with around 2,500 traffic lights in place. All of them are connected to uninterruptible power supplies and can operate during power outages.
