Travellers who plan to leave Ukraine carrying a large amount of cash in foreign currency should take care in advance to obtain documents confirming the origin of the funds. This will help avoid delays and misunderstandings when crossing the border.
If the total amount of foreign currency in cash that an individual resident takes abroad exceeds the equivalent of €10,000 on the day of departure, it is necessary to provide documentary proof that these funds were withdrawn from their own bank accounts and/or received as a result of a foreign exchange transaction.
The National Bank of Ukraine has defined a list of documents that can confirm the withdrawal of cash from accounts or the execution of a foreign exchange transaction. Among them, in particular, is an account statement showing movements of funds. Such a statement may serve as the sole supporting document for taking cash currency out of the country without additional cash desk documents, provided that the funds were withdrawn no more than 90 calendar days before the day the currency valuables are taken out by the owner.
An individual resident who carries across the border an amount exceeding the equivalent of €10,000 must provide documents confirming that the funds were withdrawn specifically from their own accounts in banks in Ukraine. In this case, the funds may be withdrawn from the account by another individual acting under a power of attorney; however, documents relating to such a withdrawal cannot be used as proof when these funds are taken abroad by the account holder’s representative.
The current list of documents confirming the withdrawal of cash from accounts or the execution of a foreign exchange transaction has been published by the National Bank of Ukraine on its official web portal.
