The second stage of reconstruction of Zaliznychna Street in Lviv is under way on the section from Yasna Street to Sharanevycha Street. The works are divided into two sections, which are at different stages of completion.
According to LKP “Lvivavtodor”, on the section from Yasna Street to Storozhenka Street, the utility networks are already almost 90% installed. Paving of the pavements with slabs has begun here, while on the carriageway the contractor Onur is preparing the base for laying the lower layer of asphalt concrete. Heavy machinery is operating on site — graders and rollers compact the prepared layers.
“In the near future, on the section from Yasna Street to Storozhenka Street, we will start laying the lower layer of asphalt concrete. At the same time, on the section from Storozhenka Street to Sharanevycha Street, utility networks are being installed,” said the director of LKP “Lvivavtodor” Mykola Vlasiuk.
Temporary diversion routes have been organised for the duration of the works. From the side of Sharanevycha Street, traffic is directed along Dekarta, Marka Vovchka, O. Stepanivny, Kvitky-Osnovianenka, Bortnianskoho and Lutskoho Streets, exiting onto Shevchenka Street. From the side of Shevchenka Street, traffic is permitted along Levandivska Street and Zaliznychna Street up to the closure point; further, the diversion runs via Yasna, Brativ Duzhykh and Brativ Mikhnovskykh Streets, exiting onto Horodotska Street.
The reconstruction of Zaliznychna Street is being carried out using loan funds. The works started at the end of last year. The project provides for a complete replacement of utilities, renewal of the road surface, installation of two cycle lanes, repair of pavements and the creation of parking spaces. The carriageway and cycle lanes will be asphalt concrete, the parking areas will be paved with setts, and the pavements with FEM slabs. The street will be levelled to a single height to ensure barrier-free movement for all categories of residents, and most pedestrian crossings will be raised to pavement level.
On 2 July, the first refurbished section of Zaliznychna Street — from the quasi-roundabout on Shevchenka Street to Yasna Street — was opened to traffic. Two-way traffic is already in operation here, with cycle infrastructure and step-free pavements in place.
After the start of russia’s full-scale invasion, major road repairs in Lviv were temporarily suspended. However, due to heavy traffic, the surface on many streets began to deteriorate rapidly, so postponing the works became economically unviable. In 2025, using loan funds, work began on upgrading one of the city’s most accident-prone streets, Zaliznychna, and in 2026 the repair of Mazepy Street started.
Repairs on Stryiska, Heroiv UPA, Horodotska and Vynnychenka Streets were or are being carried out with deferred payment. Local businesses are also contributing to the financing of road works: in particular, the repair of Koniushynna Street was carried out with deferred payment and co-financing from business, and likewise the repair of Beskydska Street is ongoing in partnership with local entrepreneurs.
