Lviv is planning a large-scale reconstruction of one of the key trunk water mains that supplies the city. The executive committee of Lviv City Council has approved the conclusion on the feasibility of Lviv Municipal Enterprise “Lvivvodokanal” taking out a loan from the European Investment Bank under a municipal guarantee. The funds will be directed towards upgrading the section of the water main from BPS “Budzen II” to BPS “Budzen III” near the village of Bartativ.
The project will be implemented under the “Restoration of Water Supply and Wastewater Services in Ukraine” programme. Its aim is to modernise the water supply system, increase its reliability, reduce the number of breakdowns and ensure a stable supply of high-quality drinking water for community residents.
The total cost of the works exceeds EUR 3.8 million. Of this amount, up to EUR 3.2 million is expected to be raised as loan funds from the European Investment Bank, with the remainder financed from other sources. The project is expected to take approximately up to two years to complete.
According to the head of the Investment and Projects Department of Lviv City Council, Andriy Pavliv, the project involves the reconstruction of 4.4 km of an emergency trunk water main. “Lvivvodokanal” has passed several selection stages to obtain concessional financing from the EIB, and the city’s decision to provide a municipal guarantee is a necessary condition for securing this loan.
Once the works are completed, around 125,000 residents of Lviv and internally displaced persons will benefit from higher-quality and more reliable water supply. According to the company’s estimates, reduced losses in the network are expected to save up to 60,000 cubic metres of water every month.
The director of Lviv Municipal Enterprise “Lvivvodokanal”, Dmytro Vankovych, notes that this trunk water main has been in operation for more than 60 years and is currently in an emergency condition, with the number of failures having increased significantly in recent years. The implementation of the project should reduce the risk of breakdowns, cut water losses and ensure stable water supply for a large part of the city.
The decision to approve the raising of the loan was supported on 21 July at a meeting of the executive committee of Lviv City Council. The next step is for the issue to be considered at a session of the City Council.
