The Lviv municipal composting station has begun accepting the first batches of fallen leaves. The start of the season was announced by LKP «Zelene misto».
Residents of the city, condominium associations, housing maintenance offices and all organisations responsible for cleaning adjoining and public areas are asked not to throw fallen leaves into mixed waste containers. They can be taken free of charge to the composting station, where plant residues are turned into useful compost.
«Leaves that fall from trees should not become rubbish. They can be processed and returned to the soil in a beneficial way. So we urge residents not to throw fallen leaves into mixed waste containers, but to send them for composting», the composting station notes.
LKP «Zelene misto» emphasises that this way organic matter is returned to the natural cycle and the city reduces the amount of waste that ends up in landfills.
The first municipal composting station in Lviv operates at: m. Lviv, vul. Plastova, 13. Food and garden organic waste is accepted here from Monday to Thursday from 8:00 to 17:00. Branches after tree pruning, fallen leaves and mown grass can be brought here.
At the station, organic matter is processed into compost, which is used as a nutrient supplement for soil in flowerbeds, gardens and vegetable plots. Thanks to this fertilisation, schools and nurseries in Lviv have improved soil conditions for planting flowers and trees, and in some institutions children are involved in greening activities.
Last year, around 8,500 tonnes of organic waste were delivered to the station and 1,355 tonnes of compost were produced. It is used to enrich the soil when planting trees and shrubs in parks, on the grounds of educational institutions and in municipal flowerbeds. Since the station began operating in Lviv, more than 42,000 tonnes of organic matter have been processed here.
