Drohobych community urges residents to sort household waste more actively

The Drohobych community continues to develop its system for separate collection of household waste. Since the beginning of May, it has introduced different tariffs for waste management services for residents who sort their rubbish and for those who use the mixed system. This was reported by the Department of Municipal Services.

The department explains that the differentiated tariffs are intended to encourage a culture of sorting and at the same time help curb further increases in the cost of the service. However, so far only 11 residents of the private housing sector have signed contracts for separate collection of household waste. One of the reasons given is the small difference between the tariffs, which means many people are in no hurry to change their usual approach to waste management.

The community stresses that sorting rubbish is important not only from an environmental point of view, but also from an economic one. Selected plastic, paper, cardboard and glass do not end up in the landfill but are sent for recycling. This makes it possible to reduce the volume of waste being landfilled and therefore to cut the costs of its transport and disposal.

The cost of the waste management service is formed taking into account the cost of fuel, wages, maintenance of specialised equipment and other expenses, which increase every year. That is why the Department of Municipal Services considers separate collection to be one of the practical tools for restraining further tariff increases in the future.

Residents of the private housing sector can already switch to separate collection by signing an individual contract with KP «Komunalnyk». This can be done directly at the company office at 15 Pylypa Orlyka Street or via the Diia Centre at 8a Boryslavska Street.

For blocks of flats, the first step is for the condominium association (OSBB) or managing company to contact the Department of Municipal Services at 4 Truskavetska Street with an application for the installation of a secure container site under the co-financing programme. Once such a site has been installed, a contract is concluded with KP «Komunalnyk» for the collection of sorted household waste.

The Department of Municipal Services notes that a detailed procedure for connecting to the separate collection system, a list of the necessary documents and contact information can be obtained directly at the institution at 4 Truskavetska Street.
