From Saturday, 3 October, Lviv is expanding the reconstruction zone on I. Mazepa Street: the second section, from P. Orlyka Street to Instrumentalna Street, will be closed to traffic. The Mazepy — Orlyka — Tychyny junction will remain open, so access to the city children’s hospital on P. Orlyka Street will be maintained. To organise the diversion during the works, Tychyny Street will become two-way.
The director of the Lviv City Council’s Department of Urban Mobility and Street Infrastructure, Oleh Zabarylo, has urged drivers to plan their journeys in advance, avoid the work zone where possible and not to enter it with oversized vehicles, so as not to block traffic on the adjacent narrow streets. Residents are also asked not to park on Tychyny Street, so as not to obstruct public transport. The police will monitor compliance with the restrictions.
According to the information from the Lviv City Council’s Transport Department, a number of bus routes will be altered for the duration of the reconstruction. Route No. 34 (towards Bilohorshcha), as well as Nos. 12, 17, 46, 51, 55a and 84 in both directions, will run along P. Orlyka Street — Tychyny Street — Khvylovoho Street — Instrumentalna Street and then continue along their current routes. Buses Nos. 7, 31, 41 and 56a in both directions will run along Khvylovoho Street — Instrumentalna Street, after which they will continue along their established routes.
For passengers’ convenience, two temporary stops will be installed on Tychyny Street. In total, there will be 11 temporary stops in the diversion zone: two on Tychyny Street, eight on Khvylovoho Street and one more on Vira, Nadiya, Lyubovi Street.
For cars, the recommended diversion is as follows: from Mazepa Street to Instrumentalna Street, then to Khvylovoho Street. From there, depending on the direction, drivers can turn into Tychyny Street towards P. Orlyka Street or continue along Khvylovoho Street towards Mykolaychuka Street, or re-join Mazepa Street. Traffic in the opposite direction will follow the same pattern. Lorry drivers are advised to use the route via Chornovola Avenue — Lypynskoho Street — B. Khmelnytskoho Street and back along the same route.
LKP “Lvivavtodor” emphasises that from 3 October the repair will cover two sections of Mazepa Street: from Mykolaychuka Street to P. Orlyka Street and from P. Orlyka Street to Instrumentalna Street. On the first stretch, the main part of the work to lay utility networks has already been completed. Contractors are now moving on to arranging parking spaces and pavements: at the Mazepy — Mykolaychuka junction, parking spaces are being paved with setts, kerbs are being installed and preparations are under way for laying paving blocks on the pavements.
At the same time, work has begun directly on the carriageway on this section: the structural layers of the road surface are being formed. In the near future, the lower layer of asphalt concrete is to be laid. Provisionally, the first section from Mykolaychuka to Orlyka is scheduled to be opened to traffic at the end of November.
On the second section, between P. Orlyka Street and Instrumentalna Street, preparatory works are starting: dismantling of the old surface, kerbs, lighting columns and components of the overhead line. Trial pits will also be dug along the water supply line, after which the replacement of utility networks and the full range of works envisaged by the reconstruction project will begin.
The repair of Mazepa Street, one of the key arteries of Lviv’s Shevchenkivskyi district, began in May. The project provides for the replacement of all utility networks, widening of the carriageway with the installation of two dedicated lanes for public transport and island platforms for bus stops, the creation of parking spaces, green areas and cycling infrastructure. The pavements will be laid with paving slabs, dropped kerbs will be installed, as well as tactile navigation and level access crossings to the footways, which should make the street fully barrier-free. Particular attention is being paid to improving access to medical institutions, in particular to the UNBROKEN Centre.
The works are being carried out with funding from the European Investment Bank. Residents are asked to take the temporary traffic restrictions into account, keep track of the updated traffic management scheme and plan their routes and travel time in advance.
