In Lviv, a significant reduction in accidents has been recorded at the junction of Kulparkivska — Vyhovskoho — Volodymyra Velykoho streets following the introduction of a new traffic pattern based on a “turbo roundabout”. According to the Department of Urban Mobility and Street Infrastructure of the Lviv City Council, the number of road accidents here has fallen by 57%.
The new traffic organisation at this junction was introduced in June. Pedestrian safety islands were installed, road markings with directional arrows were updated, and additional road signs were put up to separate traffic flows more clearly.
Analysis by the Patrol Police Department shows that over the past three months there have been 3 road traffic accidents at this junction. Over the same period last year, 7 accidents were recorded here. An important indicator of the effectiveness of the new scheme is that there are currently no injuries or fatalities, whereas in 2025 one person was killed and another injured on this stretch.
The Department of Urban Mobility explains that the positive effect is primarily linked to the change in the nature of traffic. The geometry of the “turbo roundabout” forces drivers to reduce speed even before entering the junction, the clear separation of lanes reduces the number of risky manoeuvres inside the roundabout, and the safety islands allow pedestrians to cross the road in two stages.
“Official statistics confirm that the updated scheme makes travelling through one of the city’s busiest junctions more convenient and significantly safer for all road users,” the Department of Urban Mobility and Street Infrastructure of the Lviv City Council said.
