On Heroiv UPA Street in Lviv, on the section between Vasylkivskoho Street and Smal-Stotskoho Street, two sinkholes were discovered in the carriageway during roadworks. The cause was damage to utility networks, in particular the sewer collector. The utilities are currently being repaired, after which asphalting is planned.
According to the First Deputy Mayor of Lviv, Andriy Moskalenko, one of the sinkholes is more than 4 metres deep. In the subsidence zone, repairs are under way on the sewer outlet and routine repairs on the collector, and work on this section — including laying asphalt — is expected to be completed as early as next week. After that, the contractor will move on to repair the final stretch of Heroiv UPA Street — from Smal-Stotskoho Street to Kulparkivska Street.
For the duration of the works, the section of Heroiv UPA Street between Vasylkivskoho and Smal-Stotskoho Streets is completely closed to traffic. A diversion for private cars has been organised via Horodotska, Konovaltsia and Antonovycha Streets, while Vasylkivskoho and Smal-Stotskoho Streets remain open to traffic.
The traffic pattern for public transport has also been changed: trolleybus routes No. 22 and No. 30, as well as bus routes No. 7 and No. 33, are temporarily running on alternative routes. The works on Heroiv UPA Street are being carried out by the contractor “Onur” with deferred payment.
The City Council reminds residents that after the start of the full-scale invasion by Russia, capital road repairs in Lviv were temporarily halted, but due to heavy traffic the road surface on many streets began to deteriorate rapidly. To prevent further wear and higher repair costs, the city has resumed works, in particular using loan funds and a deferred payment mechanism.
Thus, in 2025, repairs to Zaliznychna Street, considered one of the most hazardous in the city, began using loan resources. In 2026, work started on upgrading Mazepy Street with loan funds. Meanwhile, repairs on Stryiska, Heroiv UPA, Horodotska and Vynnychenka Streets are being carried out with deferred payment.
Local businesses are also contributing to the renewal of road infrastructure. Repairs on Koniushynna Street were carried out using a combination of deferred payment and co-financing from businesses, and works on Beskydska Street are ongoing on the same basis.
