In the first nine months of 2026, Lvivvodokanal Municipal Enterprise has renewed over 20 kilometres of water mains of various diameters in Lviv. Work is being carried out both on the city’s street networks and on the trunk mains that deliver water to Lviv from the abstraction points.
The lion’s share of the company’s resources is focused on the phased replacement of the oldest trunk mains of the western and northern wellfield groups, with some sections having been in operation for nearly 100 years. In August and September alone, Lvivvodokanal staff laid almost 6 km of new pipes: 3.65 km in August and another 2.29 km in September.
“We are gradually renewing the water supply network – from local sections in the city to large-diameter trunk mains that carry water tens of kilometres to Lviv. We pay particular attention to the oldest and most worn sections. This is complex and costly work, but it is precisely what enables us to reduce the number of breakdowns and water losses and to improve the reliability of the water supply,” the company Lvivvodokanal notes.
Scheduled reconstruction is currently under way on the mains that deliver water to the city from the western group wellfields. A total of 424 metres of large-diameter trunk pipes – the so-called “giant pipes” – have already been renewed.
The company explains that the replacement of trunk mains is a large-scale and expensive process. These are pipes with a diameter of 560 mm, and the cost of reconstruction projects is measured in tens of millions of hryvnias. The budget covers not only the purchase of pipes, but also earthworks, installation of technological nodes, installation of shut-off valves and the switching of networks. This package of works helps reduce the number of leaks and breakdowns on the networks and generally increases the reliability of Lviv’s water supply.
During the reconstruction of the mains, Lvivvodokanal is at the same time installing new technological nodes, fitting the necessary valves and carrying out other related works required for the further operation and maintenance of the networks.
Lvivvodokanal Municipal Enterprise operates around 2,700 km of water supply networks and 925 km of sewerage networks. According to the company, approximately 80% of the pipelines need replacing, which is why planned works to renew emergency sections of the water supply and sewerage networks are carried out every month.
