Over the past week in Lviv Region, a number of important medical, infrastructure and educational projects for the area have been implemented, and there have also been notable developments in the fields of international cooperation, support for the military and culture.
At the Yurii Lypa Lviv Regional Hospital for War Veterans and Victims of Repression, following modernisation, the most advanced anaesthesiology and intensive care unit in Lviv Region has begun operating. Using funds from the regional budget, two intensive care suites have been created here, along with a separate ward for patients who have had a heart attack and undergone stenting, and an isolation room for patients with severe infections. The upgrades are designed to provide the medical team with the conditions they need for full-scale work with the most seriously ill patients.
In Lviv, on the basis of the Danylo Halytskyi Lviv National Medical University, an Educational, Scientific and Manufacturing Pharmaceutical Centre has been opened. The new facility will combine student training, scientific research and the production of medicines, which will make it possible to restore pharmaceutical manufacturing in the city.
Repairs have begun on the Nahirne–Dobromyl road. The plan is to upgrade more than 18 kilometres of this important border route, along which 14 settlements are located. This road provides connections to highways leading to three border crossing points on the frontier with Poland.
Four servicemen from Sambir District have been awarded the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine medals “For Wounds”. In addition, two defenders from this district have been posthumously awarded the Order “For Courage” Third Class by the President of Ukraine.
International contacts and partnership initiatives are ongoing in Lviv Region. On the initiative of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the first Carpathian Eight Summit took place, at which the potential of the region was presented. During the summit there was a meeting with the President of the Federal Council of Austria, Christine Schwarz-Fuchs, who was interested in the current challenges facing the region and possible areas of support from Austria.
The regional leadership also held a meeting with a delegation from the British county of Norfolk, led by the Leader of the County Council David Bick, on deepening the partnership, and Lviv Region was visited by the newly appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Germany to Ukraine, Boris Ruge. The talks focused on expanding economic cooperation and potential new investments.
Together with Finland and other international partners, the region is implementing the “Nadija” project. It provides for comprehensive medical and psychological assistance in Lviv Region to children from across Ukraine who have suffered as a result of the war. Further steps in its implementation were discussed at a meeting with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Finland to Ukraine, Tarja Fernandez.
Particular attention has been paid to historical memory. A meeting took place with Yurii Kuzmovych, the great-grandson of prominent public figures Stepan and Mariia Fedak, at which they spoke about the family’s history, Ukrainian emigration and the preservation of national identity abroad. The remains of Mariia Fedak – an activist of the Ukrainian women’s and educational-enlightenment movement – have returned to Lviv for good. She will rest in Plot No. 49 of Lychakiv Cemetery alongside her husband Stepan Fedak.
Soldiers of the 39th Separate Unmanned Systems Battalion have presented Lviv Region with a flag from Kramatorsk as a token of gratitude for its support. The flag was at combat positions, survived shelling and bears the signatures of the servicemen and the Mayor of Kramatorsk, Oleksandr Honcharenko.
A delegation of British businesspeople and parliamentarians visited Lviv Region. The guests familiarised themselves with the region’s economic potential and discussed the current challenges faced by the area.
Regional agricultural producers will receive almost UAH 1.3 million in financial support. The relevant decision was taken at a meeting of the commission responsible for identifying beneficiaries of assistance under the Comprehensive Programme for the Support and Development of Agriculture in Lviv Region for 2021–2026.
In sport, Lviv Region hosted the first Ukrainian Sitting Volleyball Championship for Veterans. Eleven teams from various parts of the country came to the region – around 180 participants in total. Based on the competition’s results, a team will be formed for the finals of the Veterans Games 2026 and a national team of Ukraine will be selected to compete in the international veterans’ competition Veterans Games UA, which will take place in September this year.
In Lviv, the play “MAMY” (“MOTHERS”) based on short stories by Mariia Matios was performed by the Rivne Regional Academic Music and Drama Theatre. This is already the eleventh regional centre where the production has been staged. Around 700 parents who had lost relatives in the war came to the Lviv performance, and in total more than 5,000 mothers and fathers of Ukrainian soldiers have seen the play.
The city has also opened the exhibition “New Mythologies” – a joint project by Czech artists Markéta Hlinovská and Petr Válek and Ukrainian artist Sofiia Korotkevych as part of the “Czech Dreams” festival. The exhibition explores how contemporary experience shapes new images and ways of making sense of the world through art, material, sound, memory, and personal and collective experience. The exhibition can be visited until 1 October.
