A small patient from the Kamin-Kashir district had a large tumor removed from his kidney, which weighed 2.6 kg. The baby himself weighed about 12 kg before the operation.
The complex operation was performed by surgeons of the Western Ukrainian Specialized Children’s Medical Center.
“The difficulty of the intervention was that we had to remove a tumor that was more than 20% of the patient’s body weight. The tumor filled the entire abdomen. The instantaneous loss of this mass, a large amount of blood and fluid that circulates in the formation – posed a threat to Danylko’s life during the nephrectomy. However, the baby survived the operation very well, without complications,” said Bohdan Romanyshyn, a pediatric surgeon at the Center.
Now the little patient is under the care of oncologists of the Children’s Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplantation Clinic. Danylko still has a long treatment ahead of him, but the doctors hope that the worst is over.
Danilka’s mother, Ms. Nataliya, advises parents not to neglect scheduled ultrasounds and to pay attention to changes in the child’s body and well-being. Now she regrets that she did not go to the doctors sooner, as soon as she noticed the active growth of her son’s belly. In addition to Danylko, the woman has three more children.
“When Danylkov turned one year old, I was alarmed that his stomach suddenly became very large and hard. We turned to the family doctor, who referred us to an infectious disease hospital. There, we underwent an ultrasound scan, which immediately showed a kidney tumor. We decided to operate on our son in Lviv, because we heard very good reviews about your hospital,” said Mrs. Natalia.
Children’s oncologist Khrystyna Zapochna is convinced that routine medical examinations and examinations make it possible to detect kidney tumors in the early stages. In such cases, it is often possible to save the kidney and reduce the volume of further chemotherapy.
