Stebnyk Lyceum No. 7 named after Taras Shevchenko

Stebnyk Lyceum No. 7 has officially been named after Taras Shevchenko. The corresponding decision was adopted by the deputies of the Drohobych City Council during a regular session on 3 September 2026.

Following the renaming, the institution’s full title is now Stebnyk Academic Lyceum No. 7 named after Taras Shevchenko of the Drohobych City Council of Lviv Region. At the same time, the City Council approved a revised version of the lyceum’s charter, taking into account the updated name.

The initiative to name the educational institution after the Kobzar was put forward by the lyceum’s headteacher, Olena Ivanyk, together with the staff. The draft decision was prepared by the Education Department of the Drohobych City Council and submitted for consideration by the deputies.

In Drohobych, they emphasise that choosing the name of Taras Shevchenko has symbolic significance for the lyceum. The poet’s work and civic stance have become an important part of Ukrainian national identity and, over generations, have sustained Ukrainians’ aspirations for freedom, dignity and independence. This is particularly relevant in the context of Ukraine’s current struggle for its statehood, language and culture.

The City Council stresses that the name of Taras Shevchenko for the lyceum is not only an honorary title, but also a guiding principle for its educational and pastoral mission. Within the institution’s walls, pupils acquire knowledge while at the same time developing an understanding of Ukrainian history, culture and statehood, and the name of the Kobzar will serve as a daily reminder of the values that must be preserved and passed on to future generations.
