In the Drohobych municipal territorial community, the approach to organising school pupils’ transport on public transport has been reviewed. The aim of the changes is to improve children’s safety, preserve the territorial network of educational institutions and use local budget funds efficiently. This was reported by Drohobych City Council.
By decision of the executive committee of 16 June 2026 No.261 “On assigning service areas to general secondary education institutions of Drohobych City Council of Lviv Region”, service areas have been defined for the community’s schools. It is envisaged that, where possible, a child should study at an institution located as close as possible to their place of residence. This shortens travel time and reduces risks for pupils.
The community already operates 13 “Shkolyaryk” school buses purchased under a co-financing programme. A total of UAH 16,221.2 million from the local budget was allocated for their purchase. These buses provide organised transport for children, including those who live a considerable distance from school.
In view of this, entitlement to free travel on public transport is determined taking into account the child’s place of residence, place of study, the availability of a suitable educational institution nearby and the possibility of school transport.
According to the executive committee’s decision of 2 September 2026 No.293, free travel is retained for pupils in Years 10–11 of general secondary education institutions in the Drohobych municipal territorial community who live in settlements where there is no lyceum and only gymnasiums operate. For such older pupils, up to 44 free journeys per month are provided during term time on public motor transport on urban and suburban routes that ensure travel to and from the place of study.
The concession can be used upon presentation of a multifunctional electronic plastic card or the mobile application “Resident’s Card of the Drohobych Municipal Territorial Community”. During school holidays, pupils are not entitled to free travel.
Drohobych City Council emphasises that the local self-government body will continue to work on preserving schools in the community’s settlements and organising pupil transport where necessary, combining children’s safety, access to education and responsible use of budget funds.
