In Lviv, on Svobody Avenue opposite the Taras Shevchenko monument, four thuja trees that have begun to die back will be removed. The work is scheduled for 28 July, and in autumn new greenery will be planted in their place. This was reported by the Halytskyi District Administration.
The district administration noted that the trees were inspected together with specialists, in particular from the ecology department, after which a decision was made to remove them. The new plantings are planned for this autumn; several options for tree and shrub species are currently being considered.
“On Svobody Avenue we have four thuja trees that have begun to die back. They were inspected together with specialists, in particular from the ecology department, and a decision was therefore made to remove them. In their place, already this autumn, we will plant other greenery. As for what exactly this will be, we are currently looking at various options,” the Halytskyi District Administration reported.
The city council reminds residents that over the course of 2025 a total of 5,472 new plants were planted on Lviv's streets and in its parks. Of these, 1,165 are trees and 4,307 are shrubs.
Using funds from the city budget, 45 trees and 1,098 shrubs were planted in the city's parks, while a further 139 trees and 1,846 shrubs appeared in the districts. A significant share of the new plants was funded by patrons and sponsors as part of the “Give the City a Tree” campaign: 981 trees and 1,363 shrubs were purchased in this way.
Particular attention is being paid to greening educational institutions. In cooperation with the education department and gardeners, 67 trees and 305 shrubs were planted at 17 schools and nursery schools in Lviv, to improve conditions for children and create a more comfortable urban environment.
