At Pustomyty Gymnasium No. 1 in Lviv region, all 615 pupils in Years 1–9 receive free hot lunches as part of the school meals reform. Pupils in the upper years of the neighbouring Pustomyty Lyceum named after Metropolitan Volodymyr Sterniuk also eat in the same canteen.
To avoid queues and ensure comfortable conditions, since September the school has introduced three separate lunch breaks: the first for primary school pupils, the second for Years 5–6, and the third for Years 7–9.
The gymnasium administration collects information every day on how many children plan to have lunch in the canteen. To do this, messages with the next day's menu are sent to parents' groups, and in the morning a list is drawn up of pupils who are present in lessons and signed up for lunch. According to the headteacher of Pustomyty Gymnasium No. 1, Vitaliya Sereda, this enables the kitchen staff to roughly calculate the required number of portions.
The school operates an approved two-week menu. At the same time, the cooks can partially adjust it in agreement with the administration and the school nurse, taking into account the children's needs and organisational possibilities.
In 2023, the gymnasium's kitchen facilities underwent major refurbishment: the water supply, drainage and power supply systems were upgraded, production areas were fitted out, and new equipment was purchased. Due to the building's layout, the dining area was set up in the assembly hall.
Despite the work carried out, to fully modernise the school's catering conditions new furniture is still needed for the canteen, as pupils currently have lunch at standard classroom desks and sit on regular school chairs.
