The Lviv community has opened applications to take part in the autumn campaign “Give the City a Tree”. A total of 878 planting pits have already been prepared for trees and shrubs: 596 are located along streets and a further 282 in parks.
The event is organised by the Department of Ecology and Natural Resources of Lviv City Council together with the district administrations. The largest number of available planting spots this year has been allocated in the Frankivskyi district, where it is planned to plant 163 trees, 94 shrubs and 14 climbing plants.
The Department of Ecology explains that the spring campaign was not held this year because of the anticipated summer heat, which makes it harder for young plantings to take root. The main planting has therefore been moved to the autumn, as a more favourable period for plants to establish.
“The next ‘Give the City a Tree’ campaign will take place next autumn, so we advise everyone who wants to join in this year not to delay and to take the opportunity to give the city a new tree or shrub,” notes the Head of the Department of Ecology and Natural Resources, Halyna Mykitchak.
Legal entities and individuals, Ukrainian citizens aged 18 and over, as well as foreign nationals, may take part in the campaign. The benefactor pays independently for the sapling of the chosen species, while the city covers its delivery, planting, installation of supports and subsequent care.
To take part, you need to fill in an online form, and in the dedicated table select the exact address and the species of tree or shrub. Once the application has been processed, the organisers will inform you about the availability of the sapling, its cost and will send an invoice for payment at the chosen nursery.
The participant must then submit to the Department of Ecology and Natural Resources a formal application using the approved template and attach proof of payment. After this, the benefactor will be informed of the date and time of planting. The work will be carried out by landscaping specialists from the relevant district or park, and the benefactor may also join the process if they wish.

Last year, thanks to the involvement of residents and benefactors, 981 trees and 1,363 shrubs were planted in the Lviv community.
