The Ukrainian Branch of the Way of St James Officially Recognised Worldwide

Important news for the Lviv region: the Ukrainian segment of the Way of St James, known as Camino Ruteno, has received official recognition on an international level. This occurred during a meeting in the Italian city of Pistoia, where the European Federation unanimously decided to include this route in the pan-European network.

This status not only confirms our significance in the pilgrimage culture but also opens up new opportunities for the development of international tourism and economic cooperation. Maksym Kozytskyi, the head of the Lviv region, noted that this is a return to ancient traditions and a confirmation of the region’s important role in the European pilgrimage space.

Archaeological findings in the princely Zvenyhorod, such as pilgrim shells from the 12th–13th centuries, attest to Lviv region’s long-standing integration into this space. The recognition of Camino Ruteno promotes our cultural heritage on the international stage.
