126 municipal institutions in Lviv and the amalgamated communities already have heating

In Lviv and the amalgamated communities, the phased connection of public institutions to the heating system continues, based on their requests. As of 21 October, 126 municipal institutions are already receiving heat. This was reported by LMKP «Lvivteploenergo».

Of the total number of connected facilities, 17 are medical institutions — city hospitals and polyclinics. Another 109 are educational institutions: primarily nursery schools, as well as schools, lyceums, a grammar school and children’s creative centres.

«On the basis of written requests, a few days ago we restored heating to all our major city hospitals — the children’s hospital, maternity hospitals and hospitals treating both civilians and military personnel. We are also currently supplying heat to 4 polyclinics. Among educational institutions, we have received the largest number of requests for heating from nursery schools. At present, 82 nursery schools are receiving heat, including in Malechiv and Velyki Hrybovychi. We are also supplying heat to schools, lyceums, the grammar school and children’s creative centres that have submitted requests — in total, this is 27 institutions», LMKP «Lvivteploenergo» reported.

The company clarifies that some institutions are supplied with heat from solid-fuel boiler houses. More than ten medical and educational institutions are already receiving heating from alternative sources. These boiler houses are now being actively tested to identify any possible technical issues and, if necessary, adjust their operation. This should ensure a clear algorithm of actions in the event of emergencies, when there is a need to quickly start up such boiler houses.

Hospitals, schools and nursery schools in Lviv can receive heating on the basis of individual applications. To do this, the management of the institution sends a written request to LMKP «Lvivteploenergo», after which the company connects the institution to the heat supply.

The city is also carrying out broader testing of solid-fuel boiler houses installed in schools and hospitals. Currently, such boiler houses or boilers are in place in all medical institutions and in more than 40 educational institutions. They are capable of providing heat even in the absence of electricity or gas, so their operation is being checked, in particular as an option for use during the transitional period before the start of the heating season.

In March this year, the Lviv City Council approved the Resilience Plan of the Lviv Community. Within its framework, the city is implementing projects to prepare for various scenarios for getting through the winter. Key areas include the development of backup generation, protection of critical infrastructure, installation of alternative sources of electricity and heating, as well as support programmes for residents.

In parallel, Lviv is modernising and replacing heat supply and water supply networks, repairing collectors and strengthening the protection of critical facilities. More than UAH 3 billion is needed to implement the measures of the Resilience Plan. The city is raising part of the funds through borrowing from state banks and through international support. Individual projects are being implemented jointly with the European Investment Bank, the governments of Germany and Norway and other international partners, while part of the measures under the national Resilience Plan is co-financed by the state.
