Lviv Introduces Green Standards for Parking Lots

Lviv is implementing a new standard for greening parking areas.

Large trees with expansive canopies are recommended to be planted along street parking areas and large open lots. This solution will help prevent car overheating and reduce the overall temperature in the city. The new standard was approved on November 7 by the executive committee of the Lviv City Council.

“We propose that trees be planted in existing parking lots, and that greenery be immediately planned for new ones,” said the city’s chief architect Anton Kolomeytsev.

The innovation aims to reduce the heat island effect, improve air quality, and enhance residents’ comfort. The executive committee’s decision includes tree placement schemes for different types of parking lots, taking into account conditions for healthy plant growth. The Department of Architecture will be able to prescribe greening requirements for entrepreneurs and municipal institutions.
