Mechelen Donates 13 Vehicles and Aid to Lviv

A humanitarian convoy from the Belgian city of Mechelen, a sister city of Lviv, has arrived in Lviv. The delegation, led by Mayor Bart Somers, personally drove the donated vehicles to hand them over to the Lviv community.

Among the 13 donated vehicles were police and fire engines, as well as other humanitarian aid: medical supplies, generators, protective gear, household items, and equipment. A distinctive feature of this convoy was that the delegation drove all the equipment themselves, demonstrating solidarity with Ukrainians.

Mechelen’s Mayor Bart Somers emphasised that supporting Ukraine is a matter of principle for his city. He noted that Ukraine is defending Europe’s democratic values and expressed hope for Ukraine’s victory. He also announced that support will continue, with a new batch of aid expected in the autumn.

The city of Mechelen became an official sister city of Lviv in April 2024, and since then, cooperation has been actively developing. Thanks to the support of Mechelen’s mayor, €1.5 million has been allocated for the construction of a Support Centre for Ukrainians who have suffered torture during the war in Lviv.

In June 2025, the Belgian delegation had already delivered the first humanitarian convoy to Lviv, consisting of 9 vehicles and other aid. During the meeting, the mayors exchanged symbolic gifts, symbolising the friendship and partnership between the two cities.
