Research conducted in Lviv region to determine which rivers are most polluted: results
In June, the Western Bug and Syan River Basin Water Resources Management conducted surface water quality monitoring within the Ukrainian part of the Vistula River basin. These are 17 sites in the Western Bug sub-basin and 6 in the Syan sub-basin. They checked the presence of various physicochemical and chemical indicators in the water, including heavy metals, pesticides, medicines, etc.
This was reported by the Lviv Regional Water Authority.
The lowest water quality:
- in the Poltva River – by the content of dissolved oxygen, organic, biogenic substances, PAHs, volatile hydrocarbons, heavy metals, pesticides;
- in the Western Bug River below the mouth of the Poltva River – by the content of organic, biogenic substances and pesticides;
- in the Svynya River (below the town of Zhovkva) – by the content of organic and biogenic substances;
- in the Marunka River (below the town of Vynnyky) – by the content of organic and biogenic substances, pesticides;
- in the Malekhivka River (Malekhiv village) – by the content of organic and biogenic substances;
- in the Zolochivka River (below the town of Zolochiv) – by the content of organic and biogenic substances.
The best water quality was observed in the Zavadivka River (Hrushev village). Compared to the previous reporting period (May 2024), the water quality in the Shklo River and the Rybna River (Blekh) has improved.
“In summer, pesticide pollution is added to water pollution with organic and nutrients. Non-compliance with the distance of coastal protection strips, plowing of river floodplains, excessive use of pesticides and non-compliance with the technology of their use leads to the pollution of surface waters with these substances dangerous to human health,” said Oksana Viytyk, Acting Director of the Department of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Lviv Regional State Administration.
