A major overhaul has been completed on the internal access road in Drohobych’s Kniahyni Olhy neighbourhood. The works covered the stretch linking Mykhaila Hrushevskoho Street and Volodymyra Velykoho Street, which for many years caused inconvenience to residents, especially during heavy rainfall.
The Mayor of Drohobych, Taras Kuchma, together with the Director of the Municipal Services Department, Andriy Pautynka, inspected the refurbished area during a site visit. As part of the works, the road surface was replaced and a drainage system was installed. This was one of the key tasks, as previously rainwater would accumulate on the road and cause flooding in the basements of nearby buildings.
The upgraded road and footpath are important not only for residents of the surrounding blocks. This route is used daily by parishioners, students, young people and parents with prams. The road leads, in particular, to the Church of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary and towards the Park shopping centre, where a children’s playground is located.
During the visit, the Mayor instructed specialists to additionally look into improving the area around the footpath and the residential buildings. The City Council stresses that, following the repair of the carriageway, the entire public space in the neighbourhood will be gradually tidied up.
The condition of the neglected dormitory of the Drohobych Vocational College of Oil and Gas at 49 Mykhaila Hrushevskoho Street, the building of which, together with the adjoining land, is owned by the Lviv Regional Council, was discussed separately. Against the backdrop of the renewed neighbourhood, this site is particularly conspicuous. Drohobych City Council recalled that back in 2024 it had agreed to take the dormitory into the community’s municipal ownership. Once transferred, it was planned to renovate the building and, in particular, to use it to accommodate internally displaced persons. Nevertheless, the transfer of the building has still not been formalised, even though intentions to refurbish it have already been announced this year.
Taras Kuchma stressed that the dormitory should become a fully-fledged part of the renewed neighbourhood and be given an appropriate functional purpose. According to him, the premises could become a valuable resource for students, internally displaced families and other residents in need of housing. The City Council expects the Lviv Regional Council to take the necessary steps to ensure proper maintenance of the building and to determine its future.
Residents of the neighbourhood note that they have been waiting many years for this stretch of road to be repaired. Previously, the road surface was in poor condition and, during rain, houses were flooded because of the lack of effective drainage.
