Day of Mourning declared in Drohobych community as 26 NKVD victims to be buried

14 July has been declared a Day of Mourning in the Drohobych municipal territorial community. On this day in Drohobych, the burial service will be held for the remains of 26 victims of NKVD political repression, which were discovered during excavations on the site of the former “Prison on Stryiska”. This was reported by Drohobych City Council.

The order declaring the Day of Mourning across the entire community was signed by Mayor Taras Kuchma. The document, in particular, recommends that heads of enterprises, institutions and organisations of all forms of ownership lower the State Flag of Ukraine on administrative buildings, with a black mourning ribbon attached.

In the Drohobych community, all entertainment and concert events, mass cultural activities and sports events have been cancelled for this day. Business representatives are asked not to play entertainment music in retail outlets, catering establishments and on public transport.

The mourning events will begin at 10:30 with a joint prayer in the Church of the Holy Supreme Apostles Peter and Paul. At 11:00, a citywide Mourning Assembly is planned on Rynok Square, after which a funeral procession, in an organised walking column, will proceed to the Field of Mourning, where the burial service for the remains of the dead will take place.

In connection with the mourning events, from 10:30 to 14:30, until the procession has passed, traffic in Drohobych will be temporarily restricted. The restrictions will apply along the following route: vul. Stryiska (Church of the Holy Supreme Apostles Peter and Paul) – vul. Ivana Mazepy – vul. Teatralna – vul. Zavallya – vul. Truskavetska, 4 – pl. Rynok, 1 – vul. Truskavetska, 4 – vul. Zavallya – vul. Teatralna – vul. Ivana Mazepy – vul. Lesi Ukrainky, 16 – vul. V’yacheslava Chornovola – vul. 22 Sichnya – Field of Mourning.

Drivers are urged to take the temporary restrictions into account in advance when planning their journeys and, where possible, to use alternative routes.

The leadership of the Drohobych community appeals to residents to join the mourning events, so that together they can honour the memory of the innocently tortured victims of political repression and pay tribute to Ukrainians who perished under the Soviet totalitarian regime.
