At a plenary meeting of the Lviv City Council session, a package of decisions was adopted on naming, renaming and clarifying the names of streets and the square in the Lviv community.
First and foremost, they clarified the name of Danylo Halytskyi Square in Lviv and the streets of the same name in Dubliany, Malekhiv and Riasne-Ruske. From now on, these toponyms will officially bear the name King Danylo. The City Council notes that in this way they are moving away from the Soviet tradition of using the wording “Danylo Halytskyi” and restoring the historically correct name.
Councillors also supported an appeal to the government to rename Danylo Halytskyi Lviv International Airport to King Danylo Lviv International Airport. The initiators recalled that they had wanted to formalise this name back when the airport was first given a namesake, but it was not possible to implement it at that time.
In Lviv, the names of two more streets were also clarified. Lva Street will henceforth be called Prince Lev Street. In addition, instead of a name in honour of Iryna Kalynets, the street was given the name Kalynets Family Street, to honour both Iryna and Ihor Kalynets.
In Vynnyky, a section of Kiltsova Street (between Lysyka Street and Ruta Viter Street) was renamed in honour of Wladyslaw Allerov, Hero of Ukraine and commander of the separate special-purpose unit “Omega” of the National Guard of Ukraine.
In the village of Pidriasne, four previously unnamed streets received official names. The street previously listed as Nameless No. 1 has now been named Mykola Lebid Street, in honour of the Ukrainian political figure, one of the founders and the first head of the Security Service of the OUN. Nameless No. 2 was renamed King Danylo Street, Nameless No. 3 became Artem Tolochko Street, in honour of a Ukrainian defender fallen in the Russian-Ukrainian war, and Nameless No. 4 was given the name Svoboda Street.
All the decisions adopted had previously been examined and approved by the street renaming commission. According to the City Council, in the most recent period more than 100 streets and public spaces in the Lviv community have already been renamed and named with the participation of a working group and following public consultations.
At the same time, the City Hall reminds residents that, after street names are changed, they do not need to have their documents specially reissued. Only entrepreneurs will eventually be required to update their details, but for both them and residents this procedure remains free of charge.
