Embankment reinforced at Shevchenka–Kovcha junction in Lviv for new overpass construction

At the junction of T. Shevchenka and Fr Omelyan Kovch Streets in Lviv, work is under way on a new overpass that should improve connections between the Riasne residential district and the city centre. As reported by LKP «Lvivavtodor», an important stage at the site has been completed – a sheet pile retaining wall has been installed to reinforce the embankment.

The sheet pile wall is a continuous barrier made of special metal piles driven deep into the ground and tightly interlocked. This sealed structure both prevents the slope from slipping and stops water and soil from passing through.

According to LKP «Lvivavtodor», 68 sheet pile elements have been installed on the construction site on the Shevchenka Street side. Work is also nearing completion on installing a band of I-beams, which further strengthen the structure and increase its stability.

The director of LKP «Lvivavtodor», Mykola Vlasiuk, noted that this is an important part of the preparatory works, as the reinforced structure makes it possible to move on to the next stage – installing bored cast-in-place piles.

Preparatory works for the construction of the parallel overpass on Kovcha Street began in March. The new overpass will have three traffic lanes, a combined cycling and pedestrian zone, and traffic light control. The City Council stresses that the project is intended to ease traffic on the heavily congested Shevchenka Street and create the conditions needed to reconstruct the existing unsafe bridge.

The construction period for the new overpass on Kovcha Street is 11 months, although the aim is to complete the works by the end of this year. The construction cost amounts to UAH 106.8 million. The bridge is being built using loan funds, as money from the city budget is being directed to support the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
