On Ivasyuka Street in Lviv, ongoing pavement repairs are under way as part of a comprehensive project to create a modern space for the “Medical Quarter”. The initiative aims to provide a barrier-free and comfortable environment for local residents and visitors to the area.
According to the Institute of Spatial Development, the project was discussed in advance with residents at meetings in the district administration before work began. Residents’ suggestions were taken into account when developing the solutions, with the exception of one section where the community did not support the proposed changes.
The progress of the works on site was inspected by the project manager, Khrystyna Chornous. The Institute of Spatial Development stresses that the upgrade concerns not only the surface, but also the creation of a distinctive identity for the space. The historic character of the walkways with 30×30 paving slabs is being preserved, while the cobblestones that have been removed are being reused to form kerbs. Large boulders are being integrated into the landscaping to highlight the interplay between the historic setting and natural elements.
“We are not simply renewing the surface; we are working on the identity of the space, preserving its historic character and shaping a coherent design code for the quarter. We are combining the historic look of the walkways with 30×30 paving slabs with a sustainable approach, reusing cobblestones to form kerbs. We are also integrating large boulders into the landscaping, creating a striking contrast between history and nature,” the Institute of Spatial Development noted.
One of the project’s key objectives is accessibility. The street is being fitted with level entrances to stairwells and buildings, without steps, thresholds or other obstacles, to ensure the space is accessible for people with disabilities, parents with pushchairs and older residents.
Particular attention during the works is being paid to greenery. To protect the trees’ root systems, the tree pits are being enlarged. Any dangerous trees are being replaced, where necessary, with new healthy saplings. At the same time, the issue of localised flooding is being addressed: rainwater from downpipes will no longer be directed onto the pavements, but instead will be connected to the underground drainage system, which should prevent water accumulation and protect buildings from excessive moisture.
The next stage envisages extending the step-free route to the building of the Lychakiv District Administration. In the longer term, there are also plans to reorganise the small park at the street junction to properly commemorate the composer Volodymyr Ivasyuk.
