In Lviv, the capital overhaul of Heroiv UPA Street is entering its final stage. Works are under way on the last section from Smal-Stotskoho Street to Kulparkivska Street, and the plan is to fully reopen traffic here after 22–23 September. This was reported by the Lviv City Council.
In total, the upgrade covers around 1.4 km of the street. Two stages have already been completed, and at present around 400 m of the carriageway up to the junction with Kulparkivska Street are being repaired. In parallel, the city is preparing to test different traffic management options, including the possible introduction of a dedicated lane for public transport.
Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi noted that works on the final section are being carried out with deferred payment, as budgetary capacity is limited, but the contractor agreed to be paid afterwards. He also urged residents to report any possible shortcomings after the street is reopened so that the contractor can address them.
As explained by the head of the Frankivsk District Administration, Halyna Narivna, the repair of Heroiv UPA Street was divided into three stages so as not to block traffic completely. The first section to be upgraded was from Stepan Bandera Street to Vasylkivskoho Street, the second from Vasylkivskoho Street to Smal-Stotskoho Street. Only local works to restore pavements in places where kerbs were replaced remain there. The third stage covers the stretch from Smal-Stotskoho Street to Kulparkivska Street: here kerbs are being replaced, the lower layer of asphalt is being laid, manholes and storm drains are being raised, after which the top layer of surfacing will be laid.
During the repairs, cobblestones were found on several sections. They were dismantled, recorded and partly handed over to LKP “Lvivavtodor” for works on Zaliznychna Street, some were used in the improvement of the square at the terminus of tram No. 2 on Konovaltsia Street, and the rest were sent for storage.
The City Council is also considering the option of installing a dedicated lane for public transport along the entire length of Heroiv UPA Street. The Director of the Department of Urban Mobility and Street Infrastructure of the Lviv City Council, Oleh Zabarylo, said that a final decision will be taken after a trial period and an analysis of traffic flows.
“We have worked through several options for traffic management on Heroiv UPA Street. As of today, the most optimal appears to be the installation of a dedicated lane for public transport along the entire length of the street. This will make it possible to configure the operation of traffic lights so as to ensure uninterrupted movement of both public and private transport,” explained Oleh Zabarylo.
According to him, separating public and private transport flows should reduce the number of hazardous situations and chaotic lane changes, as well as make traffic more orderly. Initially, the public transport lane is planned to be introduced temporarily, in a test mode, to assess the street’s capacity and any possible delays.
The repair of Heroiv UPA Street began on 19 May. The works are being carried out by the contractor Onur with deferred payment. During the repairs, the routes of trolleybuses Nos. 22 and 30 and buses Nos. 7 and 33 have been altered, and they are bypassing the closed sections.
The City Council recalls that after the start of russia’s full-scale invasion, capital road repairs in Lviv were temporarily suspended. However, due to heavy traffic, the surfacing on a number of streets began to deteriorate rapidly, so postponing works would only have increased their cost. Therefore, some projects are being repaired using loan funds, and some with deferred payment and with the involvement of local businesses.
Thus, using loan funds, works have started on Zaliznychna Street, and in 2026 on Mazepy Street. Meanwhile, on Stryiska, Heroiv UPA, Horodotska and Vynnychenka Streets, works are being carried out on a post-payment basis. In co-financing with entrepreneurs, Koniushynna Street has already been repaired and works on Beskydska Street are ongoing.
