Last year, the Park of the Unconquered was laid in Drohobych on Nalyvaiko Street, dedicated to the memory of Ukrainians who were tortured and killed by Russian terror. The bodies of innocent Ukrainians were found in the Izium forest after the city was liberated from Russian occupation. More than a hundred oak trees were planted in Drohobych as a symbol of the defiance of Ukrainians who died a martyr’s death.
When planting the trees, part of the land plot allocated for the territory of the Park of the Unconquered was not touched, as residents of the Sambirska Street neighbourhood had already planted vegetables there. However, this year, work on further development of the Park will continue.
The greenery department of the Municipal Utility Company “SMU” is preparing the territory for further tree planting. Therefore, the residents of the neighbourhood are urged to vacate the illegally seized land plots, not to start any land works and not to plant any vegetables there.
Since the land plot on Nalyvaiko Street is officially designated as a park, it is prohibited to use the land for gardening and horticulture and to occupy it with temporary summer cottages.
“We will start further planting oaks in the Park of the Unconquered next month, subject to favourable weather conditions. We will also examine the trees planted last year – those oaks that have not taken root or have been damaged by vandals will be replaced with new saplings,” said Natalia Pylypiv, head of the Greenery Department.
To recap, after the liberation of Izyum from occupation, mass graves were found in the city’s forests, in mass graves – more than 470 bodies of innocent people. Most of them were civilians – young people, children, the elderly, women and men. All of them became victims of Russian terror simply because they were Ukrainians and did not submit to the Russian occupiers.
It was during the full-scale war that Drohobych and Izyum signed a partnership agreement on 2 July 2022. As a sign of support for the twin city, a park in memory of the unconquered Ukrainians was established in Drohobych.
