Residents of RudnO reclaim historical name of the village after over 15 years of effort

On June 5, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine officially approved the return of the historical name “RudnO” to the village in Lviv region. The resolution will come into legal effect once it is published in the “Official Bulletin of Ukraine.”

This development is highly significant for the local community, as the name change to “Rudne” occurred between 2008 and 2009 without public consultation, proper documentation, or any notification to residents. According to Nataliya Ustymenko, head of the Lviv community office in RudnO, this caused confusion and problems with legal documents, and was viewed as a sign of disrespect toward the community.

Key facts:

  • Name was changed unilaterally: without informing the public or holding hearings.

  • No official document existed: the change happened silently through electronic systems.

  • State archives confirm the name RudnO: archival records back the original name.

  • The reversal began in 2019: public discussions were organized by the local council.

  • Residents won’t need new documents: except in specific cases like real estate transactions.

Ustymenko explained that if the previous name “Rudne” appears in property documents, owners may need to obtain a certificate or a copy of the renaming resolution when engaging in official transactions.

This name restoration is a result of years of consistent efforts by the residents. Today, the village proudly bears its rightful historical name once again — RudnO.
