A 40-year-old man from Lviv had his hand saved after one of the most difficult reconstructive surgeries

40-year-old Lviv native Ihor Sydoryak, who was an entrepreneur before the Great War, became a signalman in the Armed Forces. He was seriously wounded during a grenade attack in the Kupyansk district. The man could have lost his arm, but he was helped by the specialists of the NEZLAMNI center.

“The patient arrived with an open fracture of the humerus and a massive defect of soft tissues – about 23 cm. Such an extensive wound is a direct threat of amputation. However, over the past year and a half, our reconstructive surgeons have dealt with such an injury many times. That’s why they knew what to do,” says Igor Anastasia Kulinych, treating doctor.

Doctors aligned the defender’s left humerus and fixed it with a plate. And the tissue defect was closed with a rotational flap of the broadest muscle of the back. This operation is considered one of the most difficult reconstructive surgeries. The method consists in closing the soft tissue defect with a muscle flap on the vascular pedicle. To restore the blood supply, surgeons are required to have jewel-like precision. This intervention is performed for about 10 hours.

The signalman, who was wounded in the Kupyansk direction, was operated on for 9 hours. The intervention was successful. The flap has healed, the wound is healing, and the patient is doing well. The defender thanks the doctors for saving his arm and helping him return to a full life.

During the full-scale invasion, specialists of the UNBROKEN National Rehabilitation Center mastered 25 new types of operations. Among them, one of the most difficult in reconstructive surgery is closing a tissue defect with a rotary flap. Since the beginning of the war, doctors have already performed 35 such interventions.

The head of surgery at the NEZLAMNI center, Hnat Gerich, says that the great war forced our doctors to quickly learn and master new techniques. And now our specialists already have considerable experience in the treatment of severe war injuries.
