Eight-year-old Zakhar from Ivano-Frankivsk Region receives second kidney transplant

An eight-year-old boy named Zakhar from the Ivano-Frankivsk Region has successfully received a kidney from a deceased donor at the Clinical Centre of Paediatric Medicine. This marks the second transplant in the boy’s life.

The first transplant was carried out in 2023 using his grandmother’s kidney, but due to illness, the organ had to be removed. Nephrologist Olena Klub explained that Zakhar developed a septic condition as a result of an infection in the transplanted kidney, and removal was the only option.

For over six months, the child survived on haemodialysis. A donor became available on 10th March, and the transplant took place the following day. The clinic’s director, Roman Andrunyevich, noted that modern recommendations from Japanese and German colleagues were employed, alongside new therapy protocols, which yielded positive results.

Despite postoperative complications, the child’s condition has been stabilised. Today, Zakhar returns home for the first time in eight months.
