An American neurosurgeon of Ukrainian origin came to Lviv to help save patients with brain and spinal cord diseases.
The neurosurgeon’s name is Maxim Shapiro. The doctor was born in the village of Stara Vyzhivka in Volyn. He has been operating on patients in the USA for over 20 years. This week, the neurosurgeon came to his historical homeland to share his knowledge and experience with Ukrainian colleagues who work in the First Medical Association of Lviv.
The doctor came with a team consisting of 12 specialists: neurosurgeons, anesthesiologists and interns. As part of the Ukrainian-American neurosurgical mission, foreign doctors conducted 50 consultations in medical facilities. Patients were examined, first of all, with vascular pathologies: aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations of the brain and spinal cord. Patients with tumors, neuralgia of the trigeminal nerve and complex pathologies of the spine were also consulted. Planned and emergency operations were performed. American specialists together with Lviv doctors performed 30 endovascular and open surgical interventions on the most difficult patients.
“I am very proud to be part of this team. The doctors here are fantastic, very dedicated and caring. They work in difficult conditions, but they do it very well. I came to help them and support Ukrainians in this way,” says Maksym Shapiro.
The visit of the neurosurgical team from the USA to Ukrainian hospitals took place within the framework of the charity mission UANF2023, which was organized by the Razom for Ukraine foundation. Thanks to this initiative, our doctors had the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the latest technologies for conducting microneurosurgical and endovascular operations.
Specialists from the USA also helped with a significant humanitarian cargo. They brought with them microsurgical instruments and expensive consumables for Lviv medical institutions.
