The story of two-year-old Sofiyka from Lviv has moved many, as she endured a very challenging period when a battery remained lodged in her oesophagus throughout winter. This case is a crucial reminder of the need for vigilant attention to the health of our children. When Sofiyka began showing concerning symptoms, her parents promptly consulted doctors again.
Following an X-ray, a foreign object was discovered, and thanks to the efforts of the paediatric surgeons at St. Nicholas Hospital, a round battery with a diameter of 2.5 cm, which was stuck in her oesophagus, was successfully removed. The little patient’s condition is stable, and doctors are closely monitoring for possible complications.
Doctors emphasise the importance of ensuring children’s safety and urge parents to meticulously inspect toys and items containing small parts or batteries. Sofiyka currently has to follow a special diet, but doctors plan to conduct a follow-up examination in a month.
