Organ-Saving Surgery Restores Mobility to 16-Year-Old Girl

Orthopedic surgeons performed a complex knee joint replacement for a 16-year-old patient from the Lviv region.

Yulia was admitted to the Center with a severe fracture of the femur, weakened by a malignant tumor. After examinations, the team decided to first perform chemotherapy, followed by surgical treatment. “Osteosarcoma is one of the most aggressive malignant tumors in adolescence. We decided to perform this simultaneously to avoid the risk of tumor ‘dissemination’”, explains orthopedic surgeon Oleksandr Shchurowskyi.

The operation was postponed during chemotherapy, which was aimed at reducing the tumor size. During the operation, the tumor-affected conglomerate was completely removed, and joint replacement was performed. “This intervention is standard for our Center, and we have been performing such operations for almost 30 years”, the specialist adds.

Currently, Yulia is undergoing rehabilitation and continues her cancer treatment. She is already delighted with the first results: after months of immobility, she joyfully moves her leg and is learning to walk again.
