Boy from Lviv Receives Implant to Restore Hearing

Ten-year-old Oleksandr from Lviv has been given a new chance to hear the world thanks to a cochlear implant. After a severe case of bacterial meningitis earlier this year, the boy lost almost all his hearing. Audiological examinations revealed that his level of deafness reached 100 dB. To save his hearing, doctors decided to perform an urgent implantation surgery.

The head of the paediatric otorhinolaryngology clinic at the “Okhmatdyt” hospital, Fedir Yurochko, stressed the importance of timely intervention: “In such cases, it is critically important to place the cochlear implant in time. If intervention is delayed, the situation can become practically hopeless.”

The surgery was successfully performed, and Oleksandr is currently undergoing rehabilitation. Doctors expect that a month after connecting the external part of the implant, the boy will once again be able to enjoy the sounds of the surrounding world, according to the Lviv Regional Council.
