Doctors at Okhmatdyt Discover Complex Case in 13-Year-Old Girl

At the Okhmatdyt hospital, a complex case was discovered in a 13-year-old girl with pneumonia.

While treating the girl for pneumonia, doctors discovered significantly more issues. An ultrasound of the lungs revealed a large pneumonia focus that did not disappear, despite the improvement in the child’s condition. A computed tomography (CT) scan led to the diagnosis: severe chest deformation with scoliosis.

The girl’s spine was so curved that it compressed one of the lungs, causing chronic fibrous changes in the lung tissue. *”According to the mother, the curvature began to develop at the age of 10. But we, the doctors, understand that the process started earlier. It just had no visible symptoms at that time,”* commented Ruslana Prots, the center’s pediatric allergist.

The complexity of the case required a multidisciplinary approach. Pediatric allergist Ruslana Prots, thoracic surgeons Oleh Leniv and Roman Kovalskyi, and ultrasound doctor Olesya Borova-Halai were involved in the treatment. **Surgical intervention** is the only way to stop the progression of the deformation and improve the child’s quality of life.
