The girl came to the doctors with complaints of pain in her legs, which worsened at night. She was also worried about swelling on her neck, which local doctors initially took as swollen lymph nodes and muscle inflammation.
“My daughter was crying in pain, and we were looking for help wherever we could,” the girl’s mother recalls with tears;
The girl was admitted to the ZUSDMCH in a very serious condition, almost completely immobile;
“The neurological symptoms were rapidly increasing due to the mass in the cervical spine. It was necessary to start treatment immediately, because the compression caused by the tumour threatened irreversible changes in the body. “Everything happened very quickly: on Friday evening we held a medical consultation, discussed everything with the mother, proposed a treatment plan, and on Saturday morning the patient started chemotherapy,” said Nelya Vovk, an oncologist at the Clinic of Paediatric Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplantation.
The disease that immobilised 10-year-old Yana’s body was overcome. In total, Yana underwent 11 blocks of chemotherapy. The positive dynamics was noticeable immediately after the first blocks. The girl’s body responded well to the therapy, the tumour shrank, so there was no need for surgery. Throughout her treatment, Yana was intensively cared for by the specialists of the Clinic of Comprehensive Medical Rehabilitation.
One of the important stages in the treatment was a bone marrow transplant;
“The treatment was completed with a bone marrow transplant, so that the disease completely receded. By the way, this transplant was the 14th in the Clinic,” the doctors say.
The little Drohobych girl has returned home after a nine-month hospital stay. Friends from the Clinic of Paediatric Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplantation came to congratulate Yana on her discharge. They say that her story of recovery inspires them to continue their fight against the disease. In the photos from the discharge, the mother and daughter are smiling and happy. The doctors say that they want to see as many smiles as possible, and they are ready to continue working without a break.
