city-adm.lviv.ua reports that a 4-year-old girl from the Lviv region almost lost her arm due to tonsillitis. However, thanks to the efforts of Lviv medical professionals, 4 cm of bone was regrown for her. After suffering from tonsillitis, the child developed dangerous osteomyelitis, an infection that destroyed part of the bone tissue.
Surgeons from the St. Nicholas Children’s Hospital of the First Medical Association of Lviv successfully performed several operations to save the girl’s limb. Initially, they removed the pus and installed a special device to suction out discharges from the bone, then applied a cast to fix the arm.
To restore the destroyed part of the bone, specialists used an external fixation device. The surgical team worked under X-ray control to ensure precise fixation. A bone gel applied to the fracture site stimulated the regeneration process.
After a few months, when the bone had fully healed, the device was removed. Until the bone is completely strengthened, Solomiika must limit physical activity, but she will soon be able to return to her childhood life.
