Lviv Doctors Save Boy from Kryvyi Rih with Unique Technology

14-year-old Andriy from Kryvyi Rih, who suffers from abnormal bone fragility due to kidney disease, received unique treatment in Lviv. Specialists at the St. Nicholas Children’s Hospital of the First Medical Association of Lviv applied an innovative bone fusion technology using stem cells.

Andriy has been battling various ailments since childhood, including a heart defect and Arnold-Chiari malformation. Last year, he was diagnosed with a hip fracture without any injury, which was a result of critically high creatinine levels due to kidney failure.

In a Dnipro hospital, he underwent hip surgery, but the situation worsened, and the family turned to Lviv transplantologists. Orthopaedic-traumatologists decided not to replace the joint but to use an innovative bone fusion method.

During the operation, doctors removed screws that were blocking the joint and performed a complex bone repositioning. They then introduced stem cells obtained from the patient’s adipose tissue to stimulate the formation of osteoblasts.

The head of the orthopaedic-traumatology department, Halyna Hachkevych, noted that this method is unique for Ukraine and has already shown successful results. After the procedure, Andriy can already stand on his feet, and a kidney transplant awaits him in the future.
