Lviv doctors removed a huge abscess from the lung of a five-year-old girl

Doctors of the St. Nicholas Hospital of the First Medical Association of Lviv operated on five-year-old Yulia with pleural complications of pneumonia. This usually develops in the elderly or patients with immunodeficiency.

Little Yulia was admitted to a children’s hospital with right-sided pneumonia. The disease is caused by the covid virus infection and is complicated by pleurisy, that is, a condition where excess fluid accumulates in the peripulmonary cavity. Due to the infection that began to develop in this liquid, an abscess formed in the girl’s right lung. But because of covid, the child’s immune system could not cope with the bacteria.

“Traditional treatment with antibiotics and the use of drainage did not help Yuli – the girl had a fever, she had signs of respiratory failure. It was necessary to act immediately, because the child could develop a chronic purulent infection or even sepsis. That is why she underwent surgery – lung decortication,” the hospital said.

During the operation, specialists of the surgical department of the St. Nicholas Hospital opened the girl’s lung and, having made two punctures, eliminated the focus of infection minimally invasively.

Surgical intervention made it possible to reduce the length of the girl’s stay in the hospital – already on the sixth day, Yulia continued her treatment at home. Now the girl is undergoing rehabilitation and continues to recover at home.
