Lviv neonatologists saved a baby with a rare metabolic disorder

Doctors of St. Nicholas Hospital administered a life-saving injection of hormones to a newborn baby with pathology. Now Maksymko feels well, he became active again and started eating well.

On the 12th day after the birth of her son Maksymka, Yustyna’s mother noticed that the boy began to eat poorly and was vomiting. At first, the woman thought that everything was due to a change in the formula for feeding. But when the child turned pale and hardly moved, she called an ambulance.

From the Yavoriv district, the baby was taken by ambulance to St. Nicholas Hospital in critical condition – with shock and difficulty breathing. Doctors immediately suspected that the boy had a congenital endocrine disease. And after a series of urgent tests and examinations, hyperplasia of the adrenal cortex was discovered. This is a congenital pathology in which the adrenal glands do not produce enough hormones. Therefore, the child had a deficiency of cortisol, a hormone necessary for the maintenance of all body systems, as well as regulation of daily rhythms and metabolic processes. The disease is rare and occurs in one child out of 12,000.

Immediately after birth, the pathology is not manifested in any way. But within a few weeks, children lose weight, heart rate decreases, and shock develops. Only replacement therapy can save such patients. Therefore, the boy was injected with hormones and his condition stabilized.

Now Maxim feels well, he became active again and started eating well. He has already returned home with his mother. The boy is under the supervision of a pediatric endocrinologist, because he will take hormone replacement therapy.
