Since the beginning of 2024, surgeons of the First Medical Association of Lviv have performed 26 organ transplants from family and posthumous donors. All operations were successful, so the patients got a chance for a full life.
“Thanks to the consent to posthumous donation and the decision of the donor’s relatives, since the beginning of the year we have successfully transplanted 26 organs. And in general, over three years, we performed 327 transplants both from a family donor and from a donor with confirmed brain death.
The work of our center is not easy and always requires making difficult decisions. But the most difficult decision is for relatives and friends of donors who donate organs for patients who need a transplant. We sincerely sympathize and thank the relatives and friends of patients with confirmed brain death for such a difficult and, at the same time, necessary decision. Donors are our eternal Heroes,” said Maksym Ovechko, head of the Transplantology Center of the First Medical Association of Lviv.
Doctors also remind that all adult and able-bodied persons can sign a lifetime consent for posthumous donation by contacting the transplant coordinators of the Transplantology Center anywhere in Ukraine. We will remind you that in just three years, 327 organ transplants were performed in Lviv. These are hearts, livers and kidneys, as well as lungs. And last year, for the first time in Ukraine, a pancreas and kidney complex was transplanted here, as well as the first heart-lung complex transplant and a successful split liver transplant in Ukraine.
By the way, the updated Transplantology Center of the First Medical Association of Lviv became operational in 2021. There are 7 intensive care and 10 inpatient beds, as well as 2 isolated operating rooms with the latest equipment.
