For 5 days, a mission of American doctors worked at the Lviv Regional Clinical Children’s Hospital “Okhmatdyt”. During this time, together with the doctors of the hospital, foreign specialists managed to conduct almost 40 operations and more than 100 consultations.
This week changed the lives of children and families, the children were able to breathe, eat, smile on their own, some took off the glasses they used to wear to mask their faces with scars – the medical facility emphasizes, and the doctors tell what surgical interventions and consultations were carried out.
“We worked closely with plastic surgeon Larry Arnold during this visit. We jointly performed several surgical interventions on children of different ages (from 1 year to 16 years) with complex pathology of the hand. In particular, several children underwent removal of keloid scars on the hand with plastic replacement with a full-layer skin autograft. In the process of such cooperation, there is mutual enrichment and exchange of experience,” noted orthopedic traumatologist, head of the traumatology department Oleksandr Korolkov.
As anesthesiologist Volodymyr Mishchuk said, among the patients who were operated on, there were children with features that in anesthesiology are defined as “difficult airways.” Therefore, tracheal intubation using a fiberscope was used, and ENT specialists and a thoracic surgeon were also involved. In addition, to reduce blood loss, the method of controlled hypotension was used, which also created better conditions for the work of surgeons.
The hospital adds that children from all over Ukraine received solutions to complex problems with which they could not be helped before.
